Sept. 13, 2019- The DePauw University volleyball team fought hard on day one of the DePauw Tigers Invitational, winning 3-0 against Whitman before falling 3-1 against Aurora in its second match of the night.
In match one, the Tigers attacking efforts kept them in front of the Blue Jays throughout each set.
In the first set, the Tigers found its groove early, jumping to a 4-1 lead off of a series of kills. Despite tying the game at four, the Tigers stayed on the offensive tallying 46 attacks finishing the set with a commanding 25-17 win.
The second set started with back-to-back errors by the Tigers, but the Blue Jays' 2-0 lead would be short-lived. DePauw would go on a 5-0 run taking the lead and pulling away yet again. With just six errors and 13 kills for the set, the Tigers won the second set 25-16.
In the third and final set, DePauw and Whitman went back and forth, with five ties before the Tigers took control of the set. Recording its best hitting percentage of the night, .250, with just four errors in the set DePauw would win the set 25-17.
Facing Aurora University in the second match DePauw fell to the Spartans 3-1.
Though the Tigers were stunned in the first set falling 25-7, DePauw rallied back in the second set, stringing multiple attacks together to gain a 6-1 advantage. The Spartans did not go away and continued to put pressure on the Tigers, but DePauw prevailed in the second set 25-23.
Unfortunately for DePauw, Aurora's blocking and attacking power, gave them the upper hand, taking the third and fourth set from the Tigers 25-16 and 25-14 respectively.
DePauw continues its home-opening weekend with two more matches on day two of the DePauw Tigers Invitational. Match one scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. against Elmhurst College, followed by its second game against Alma College at 2:30 p.m.
