Sept. 6, 2019 (Lansing, Mich.)- The DePauw University volleyball team finished day one of the MIAA/NCAC Crossover with a five-set win over No.21 Hope College (17-25, 25-13, 28-26, 20-25, 15-11).
Meeting for the first time since DePauw beat Hope 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, the intensity between the two teams created an exciting day one matchup.
In the first set, the Tigers fell behind early, unable to recover and match the attacking power of the Flying Dutch, despite committing only three errors.
Turning the tables in the second set, DePauw tallied 11 kills between five players and four separate players recorded a service ace, giving the Tigers a definitive 25-13 set win.
Not willing to be put away the Flying Dutch and DePauw were evenly matched in the third set with 15 kills apiece. However, errors got the best of Hope, resulting in the Tigers 28-26 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
After five different lead changes, the Flying Dutch remained on top and forced a fifth set between the two teams with the help of 11 kills and committing only four errors to the Tigers eight.
Despite having fewer total attacks and kills, DePauw's ability to fly around the floor and communicate with each other led to a strong 15-11 set win over No. 21 Hope.
DePauw continues to play in the MIAA/ NCAC Crossover Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 7 with two matches. Match one is set for Noon against the Albion College Britons, while match two is set for 4 p.m. against the Knights of Calvin College.
