Season Preview: Women's Tennis

The DePauw women's tennis team will have a fresh look in 2016 after the departure of a senior-laden squad.

The 13 student athletes on this year's team are void of seniors and have just one returning letter winner in Maddie Lee. Lee is one of three juniors on the team, whom will look to lead three sophomores and seven freshmen.

Lee, Morgan Cohen and Gretchen Wilder are the returning juniors. Libby Grant, Alyssa Seneviratne and Maddie Ulrich make up the sophomore class. Key departures included Maggie MacPhail and Claire Marshall.

The inexperience was enough for the North Coast Athletic Conference women's tennis coaches to select DePauw to finish second in the NCAC Preseason Poll. Denison is the favorite with five of the possible eight first place votes for 61 points, but the Tigers aren't far behind. They took the remaining three first place votes and came in second at 56 points.

Rounding out the preseason poll was Kenyon (49), Oberlin (39), Allegheny (32), Ohio Wesleyan (23), Wooster (17) and Wittenberg (11).

The Tigers have won the past four NCAC Championships. Last year the 14th-ranked Tigers blanked Denison 6-0 to claim its 11th consecutive and 14th overall postseason appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships.

DePauw eventually fell in the NCAA Quarterfinals against top-ranked Williams (Mass.). They finished the year with a 17-9 overall record.
