Gambier, Ohio- The DePauw University women's soccer team is this year's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Women's Soccer Champions after beating Kenyon College 1-0, in the last minute of regulation.
From the opening whistle, the Tigers dominated the field. Moving the ball across the pitch with its speed and well-placed passes, it forced the Ladies to be on the defensive and showcased DePauw's aggressive and persistent offensiveness.
DePauw's ability to control the pace of the match was reflected in the shot differential between the two teams. Within 25 minutes of play, DePauw took five shots, earned four free kicks, and two corner kicks to Kenyon's one free-kick.
However, after 45 minutes of the game, the Tigers remained tied with Kenyon 0-0 at the half.
In the second half, Kenyon came back with confidence, taking ten shots to DePauw's nine and forcing the Tigers to play its style of soccer.
Despite being on the defensive more in the second half, DePauw managed to get the ball into the Ladies backfield and ultimately keep it there as time ticked by in regulation. With about 90 seconds left in the game, the Tigers' forwards rushed the Kenyon goalie box, and its persistence in winning cleared balls paid off.
In the 89th minute of play with just 41 seconds left in the match, Alex Berkley settled a cleared ball, would up and took a shot 24 yards out, rocketing a ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
With this victory over Kenyon, the Tigers finish undefeated in NCAC play and earn the title of NCAC regular-season champions. DePauw women's soccer host Kenyon College on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the semifinals of NCAC tournament play. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
