John Carter, DePauw women's soccer coach from 1990-2014, unexpectedly passed away earlier today.
During his 24 seasons as head women's soccer, Carter led the Tigers to a 255-156-24 record. During that time DePauw teams collected six conference championships including three each in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference (1995, 1996, 1997) and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (1999, 2003, 2005).
Additionally, the 2012 squad won the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Carter earned four conference coach of the year honors.
During his tenure, seven DePauw teams earned spots in the NCAA Division III Championship including the 2003 team which advanced to the national semifinals before falling to University of Chicago in overtime. His 255 wins rank 42nd in Division III women's soccer history.
"He carried himself very professionally and his first concern was always for the experience of the student-athlete," Page Cotton, DePauw's former director of athletics and men's soccer coach said.
"He led a tremendous program at DePauw but was an advocate for women's soccer not only in Indiana, but throughout the Midwest."
Visitation is on Monday, September 4, from 2-6 p.m. at Grand Park in Westfield.
