Tigers Use Fast Start to Take DePauw Tipoff Tournament

Greencastle, Ind. –After opening the DePauw Tipoff Tournament with a cold start, the DePauw women's basketball team finished it with a hot one, riding an 18-2 first quarter into a 52-47 win over Rose-Hulman on Saturday.

With Friday's 54-43 win over Birmingham-Southern the Tigers took first place in the tournament and improved to 2-0 to start the season. Maya Howard led DePauw with 12 points and eight rebounds. She was the only Tiger to score in double figures, while 11 different Tigers scored.

Rose-Hulman (1-1) had the cold start Saturday, shooting 16 percent (3-of-19) from the court in the first half. DePauw opened the first half at 45 percent (14-of-31) and led 32-17 after two quarters.

Rose-Hulman got back into it with a reversal of fortunes in the second half with the Fighting Engineers shooting 42 percent (11-of-26) to DePauw's 22 percent (5-of-23).

DePauw finished the game at 35 percent (19-of-54) slight ahead of Rose Hulman's 31 percent (14-of-45).

Rose-Hulman took the fourth quarter 19-5 but it was too little too late as the Tigers did just enough to close the game out. DePauw had 10 steals and out-rebounded Rose-Hulman 34-27. Their 14 offensive rebounds resulted in 12 second chance points.

Freshman Sydney Kopp added seven points. Taylor Howard scored six, and Melinda Franke added two points and eight rebounds.

Contributions came from everywhere for the Tigers. Paige Littrell came off the bench and put up five points in six minutes, and Lauren Longbrake had two points and two rebounds in her two minutes of playing time.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday when they host Franklin at 8 p.m.
