Bloomington, Ill. - DePauw battled back from a five-run deficit and forced extra innings, but Transylvania's Janelle Hynes clubbed a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the 10th to give the Pioneers an 8-6 win over the Tigers in the first game of the Bloomington, Illinois, regional of the NCAA Division III Championship.
DePauw dropped to 23-21 with the loss and will face Thomas More at 1:30 p.m. CDT tomorrow. The Saints lost to host Illinois Wesleyan, 4-0, in the day's second day. Transylvania improved to 33-7 and plays Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow at 11 a.m. CDT.
Brittany Mumford led off the 10th with a walk and moved to second on Shelby Gambrell's sacrifice bunt. Hynes then delivered the two-run shot, her first homer of the season, for the win.
DePauw found itself down, 5-0, after the first as Mumford started the inning with a single to right and stole second before Gambrell reached on an error. Hynes loaded the bases with a bunt single before Jessica Powell plated Mumford with an infield single. Emma Baldwin replaced Julia Bork in the circle and was greeted by Meg Liter's RBI single. Shelbi Poehlein made it 4-0 with a two-run single and Mumford later drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 5-0.
The Tigers started their comeback in the second as Bekka Roberts doubled with two outs and advanced to third on Alyssa Nowak's single. Abey Bass singled, scoring Roberts but was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play to end the inning.
Transylvania countered that in the bottom of the second as Hynes walked, moved to second on Powell's bunt single and to third on a wild pitch. Liter then delivered an RBI single to left.
DePauw evened the score in the fifth as Bass doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Liz Getz walked before Kaylyn Linder loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jordan Fera knocked in a pair with a double before Sidney Holler scored two with a single. Megan Montgomery's single scored Sarah Beischer and tied the contest, 6-6.
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the sixth, but Baldwin struck out Laurel Major to end the threat.
Linder, Fera, Roberts and Bass each had two of DePauw's 13 hits. Liter led Transylvania with three of its 11 hits with Mumford, Hynes and Powell each totaling two.
Baldwin moved to 10-9 on the season and struck out 10 in 9 1/3 innings, while Kameron Bowling improved to 9-2 with five innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
