Tigers Drop Doubleheader to Another Top-10 Team

Newport News, Va. - DePauw dropped to 4-14 on the season after a doubleheader loss at seventh-ranked Christopher Newport by scores of 3-2 and 8-0. The Captains improved to 15-3.

The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the third as Leah Andrews led off with a double, moved to third on Rachael Payne's sacrifice bunt and scored on Patty Maye Ohanian's sacrifice fly. Liz Andrews followed with a double and scored on Emerald Cheesbrew's double.

Christopher Newport made it 3-0 in the fifth as Liz Andrews singled with two outs and pinch-runner Abby Eichelberger advanced to second on Cheesbrew's walk. Eichelberger then scored on a DePauw error.

The Tigers were hitless until the seventh when Sidney Holler singled with one out and Jordyn Fera followed with a two-run home to left. The game ended as the final two DePauw batters grounded out.

Holler and Fera had the lone two DePauw hits, while Liz Andrews had two of the Captains' seven.

Emma Baldwin dropped to 2-6 in the circle for DePauw, while Aubrey Bates improved to 7-0. The defeat was the Tigers' eighth one-run loss of the year.

In the nightcap, the hosts scored four in the first with three coming on a homer from Cheesbrew and the final coming on Calah Savage's RBI single that scored Grace Wild. The Captains added one in the second on Ohanian's sacrifice fly.

Christopher Newport ended the contest in the bottom of the fifth on Savage's solo homer and Ohanian's two-run blast.

Becca St. Germain had two of DePauw's three hits, while Payne, Cheesbrew and Savage each had two of the Captains' 10 hits.

Julia Bork dropped to 2-6, while Ohanian improved to 2-0.

The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Hiram.
