Timely Hitting and Solid Pitching Give Tigers 2-0 Start in NCAC Play

Greencastle, Ind. – The DePauw softball team had no time to rest after returning from their spring break trip but were able to pull off a double header sweep over Wooster, 3-2 and 3-1, to open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

In game one, all of the offense came in the second inning. Wooster went up 2-0 thanks to two RBI singles. However, the Tigers came right back with three in the bottom of the inning.

Kathleen Byers hit a sacrifice fly to left for their first run. Later, Bass stole home to tie it, before pinch hitter Bekka Roberts hit an RBI single to center to give the Tigers the lead for good.

Brooke Bandy got her first win of the season after pitching the first four innings. She gave up two earned runs and struck out two.

Devin Pieper recorded her first save, pitching the final three frames and allowing just two hits. The Fighting Scots threatened in the seventh with runners on first and second and two out, but catcher Sidney Holler caught the runner off second in a rundown to get the 2-4-5 putout to end the game.

In game two, Emma Baldwin pitched a complete game to move to 2-4 on the year. She needed just 94 pitches, and allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out nine.

After Wooster's one run two-hit first inning, Baldwin shutdown 18 of the next 20 batters she faced.

Offensively, DePauw scored two in the second starting with an RBI single from Liz Getz. With runners now on the corners, Getz got caught stealing second, but her distraction allowed Abey Bass to score.

In the fifth, Andi Sarkisian singled to second base to score Getz to put DePauw up 3-1.

Getz finished the second game 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Sarkisian finished 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk.

The wins put DePauw at 5-13 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC. Wooster drops to 8-12 and 0-2 in the NCAC.

DePauw heads to Anderson on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
