DePauw Beat Oberlin 2-1 in First Conference Matchup

Sept. 28, 2019- The DePauw University men's soccer team beat Oberlin College 2-1 in a physical match to open North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

Closing out the Saturday, Family weekend festivities, the Tigers sought to tally its first NCAC win of the season. Just eight minutes into the game, its hope to start conference play came true with an unassisted goal by Jay Klein.

Following a shot attempt that was was deflected by the Oberlin goalie, Klein was in the right place at the right time to clean up the rebound and put DePauw up by one.

The Tigers managed to hold onto that lead and keep control of the ball throughout most of the first half, despite Oberlin's attempts to squeeze most of the play into DePauw's half.

Despite the Tigers'Tigers' ability to set the pace of the game, Oberlin did get one great look in particular after DePauw was called for a handball in its box. Fortunately for DePauw Dylan Ruzbasan kept his cool during the penalty shot, and saved it to keep the Tigers up.

The Tiger's second goal was a combination of its speed and Oberlin'sOberlin's desire to push up its defensive line. Will Hartman managed to beat his last defender and slip the ball past the goalie at the last second, giving DePauw a bit more cushion.

Up 2-0 with 30 minutes in the game, Oberlin and DePauw'sDePauw's play became a bit chippy. Though Oberlin managed to put in a late goal around the 88th-minute, it wouldn't be enough for the Tigers continued to fly around the field and contain Oberlin'sOberlin's attacks.

DePauw (6-3, 1-0 NCAC) host St. Mary of the Woods on Tuesday, Oct. 1, with game time set for 7 p.m.
