Tigers' Rally Falls Short at Capital

Columbus, Ohio - DePauw led after one quarter, but host Capital outscored the Tigers 12-3 over the middle two quarters and hung on for a 14-11 win over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 1-2, while the Crusaders improved to 1-1.

Capital's C.J. Hughes scored the game's first goal just 2:23 into the contest, but DePauw scored three straight for a 3-1 lead with 1:47 left in the opening quarter. The Crusaders scored 36 seconds later before blanking the Tigers, 5-0, in the second for a 7-3 halftime lead.

Ben Davis and Will Roberts scored in the opening three minutes of the second half to trim the Capital lead to 7-5. The Crusaders then put together a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 14-6 after three periods.

DePauw shut out Capital in the fourth, while tallying five goals  to close the gap to three.

Ben Sherman, Steen Jorgensen, Davis and William Dorger each scored two goals for DePauw, while Sherman assisted twice. Brennan O'Callaghan scored seven for Capital and added three assists, while Huges added three scores. 

Charlie Robson had 10 saves in goal for the Tigers, while Cole Palmby stopped 16 shots for Capital.

The Tigers held a 54-37 edge in shots, but Capital connected on 14 of its 24 shots on goal, while DePauw made 11 of its 27 shots on goal. DePauw dominated the faceoffs by winning 22 of the 28 including Joe Garvey's 20 of 25 performance. 

DePauw also held a 25-23 edge in ground balls as Garvey led the Tigers with nine. Capital only committed 12 turnovers to DePauw's 20.

The Tigers face Calvin on Saturday, March 3, with a 1 p.m. game at Grand Rapids Christian High School.
