Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw nearly erased an early five-goal deficit, but visiting Rhodes scored eight straight including six in the third quarter to take a 19-9 win over the Tigers. The contest, which saw snowy conditions in the first half, was the season opener for both teams on Saturday.
Wil Roberts and Steen Jorgensen each scored three goals for the Tigers, while William Dorger added two and Donny Bleifuss tallied one. DePauw outshot Rhodes 44-40, won 11-of-30 faceoffs and cleared 18-of-20 attempts.
Rhodes' Ryan Fennelly, who led the game with four goals and four assists, scored his first within the first minute of the game, and Rhodes opened to an early 6-2 lead after the first period. However, DePauw took the second period 5-2 and made it an 8-7 game at halftime.
Rhodes distanced themselves with a 6-0 third period. They scored twice in the opening 1:04 of the period and scored eight unanswered into the fourth until Dorger scored his second goal with 12:20 left in the game.
DePauw goalkeeper Charlie Robson took the loss. He recorded six saves. Cameron Link took the win in net for Rhodes as he made 14 saves in the 55 minutes he played.
The Tigers will return to action next Saturday when they host Kalamazoo.
