Delaware, Ohio -- In a battle between the third and fourth place teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Ohio Wesleyan prevailed over DePauw on Saturday 79-72.
The win keeps Ohio Wesleyan in third place at 8-2 and 11-6 overall, while DePauw falls to 5-5 in conference play and 9-8 overall.
The game was a story of runs as Ohio Wesleyan took an early 11-4 lead, but DePauw cut it quickly to trail 15-12 midway through the first half. However, that began another Ohio Wesleyan run and they took their lead to double digits at 23-13 with 9:08 remaining. Two minutes later DePauw cut that lead to three at 23-20.
Back-to-back three pointers from Ohio Wesleyan made it a nine point game and they ended up taking a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Ohio Wesleyan came out hot out of halftime, building their lead to 47-32 just two minutes in, and they continued to lead by double digits midway through at 57-49 with 10:07 remaining.
DePauw finally got the game back to single digits with just over a minute left in the game and made it a six point game with 23 seconds remaining, but Ohio Wesleyan hit their free throws to wrap up the game.
The Tigers shot a higher percentage from the floor (46.4 percent to 42 percent) and from beyond the arc (40 percent to 24 percent), but shot just 67 percent from the free throw line (14-of-21) to Ohio Wesleyan's 80 percent (12-of-15).
The Battling Bishops outrebounded DePauw 41-32 and outscored them in points off turnovers 14-6 and second chance points 16-5. DePauw's bench outscored Ohio Wesleyan's 36-19 and both teams scored 34 points in the paint.
DePauw returns to action Wednesday when they host Wittenberg.
