Tigers Top Quakers in Second-Half Comeback

Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw University field hockey team finished its regular season play at home with an emphatic win, beating the Earlham College Quakers 3-2 in regulation.

The Quakers came out strong and got the ball into the Tigers' defensive half quickly. Earlham's persistence led to an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter after crowding the circle and scoring on the weak side of the cage.

Down by one, the Tigers attempted to pick up the pace of the game. However, the Quakers matched its energy and scored yet another goal just a minute into the second quarter.

Not letting the score get to them, DePauw pushed play back into the Quakers half and was awarded a penalty corner. Initiating the corner, Kate Milner would pass it to Maddi Little, who then switched the field and got it to Maddie DeAscentis, who would give it back to Milner to cut Earlham's lead to one.

With momentum on its side at the beginning of the second half, the Tigers' demeanor changed, and it became evident that DePauw was no longer on the defensive. Though Earlham managed to get off some early shots on the Tigers' goal, Allie Duranceau, laid it out all on the line and saved three shots in a matter of 30 seconds.

Finally, getting the ball cleared up the field, DePauw was ready to strike and, once again, found itself slowing down the game with a penalty corner. Milner would step up to set the play, and this time after it was fielded by Sarah Goff, she found Alexa Steil to tie the game at two.

With the game tied at two apiece, DePauw entered the final quarter with determination and zeal. Pressuring the Quakers fast and early, the Tigers forced a majority of the play into Earlhams half for the remainder of the match. At the 48th minute, Milner would fight her way in the circle getting into position to score the game-winning goal.

With over ten minutes to play, the Tigers maintained its composure, without giving up any sort of pressure, and closed out the game with a well-deserved win.

The Tigers improve to 5-3 in the NCAC and 10-8 overall; with this win, DePauw clinches a postseason tournament spot.
