Jim Buelow is a native of Ypsilanti, Mich., and a Rector Scholar. Completing his freshman year at DePauw in 1971, he returned for his first year of varsity eligibility the following fall and made an immediate impression on the football field as a defensive safety and kickoff and punt returner. That year he was selected MVP and made the All-Indiana Collegiate Conference first team. The following spring, as a pitcher and center fielder, he pitched a no-hitter against Purdue University and batted .321 for the season. He continued his athletic excellence during his junior and senior years and was voted MVP both years in football and baseball. He was again selected all-conference in football both years and all-conference in baseball his senior year, when he batted .341 for the season. Coach Katula says: "Buelow is the best defensive back I've seen in my 38 years at DePauw." He has been employed by the Wilson Sporting Goods Co. Since 1983; he has been a sales representative for Titleist and Foot-Joy, where he has received honors as Salesman of the Year, Million Dollar Club Member and Sales Achievement Award for Ongoing Excellence. He has coached youth baseball for 10 years and feels it is now time to "work on my golf game." He is married to Carol, an Eastern Michigan University alumna. They live in Oakland, Mich. The Buelows have three children, all of whom excel in athletics.
