Colin R. Smith ’01, a Horizon Scholar at DePauw, received his B.A. in Chemistry. Smith became DePauw’s third NCAA individual champion when, as a freshman, he won the discus throw at the Division III Championships with a throw of 50.14 meters (164-6). Smith went on to earn all-America honors five more times including three in the weight throw at the Division III Indoor Championships and two more in the discus at the Outdoor Championships. He also qualified twice in the hammer throw. Smith placed second in the discus at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships and third in the weight throw at the 2000 Indoor Championships. He won the discus three straight years at the Little State meet and the hammer once and was the field events MVP in 1999. Smith was a three-time conference champion in the discus and once in the shot put. At the time of his induction he still held the top to discus throws in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference history and was DePauw’s record holder in the discus, hammer, shot put and weight throw (indoor).

As a student, he was honored with the Ricketts Award in physical chemistry in 2001. Smith earned his Masters from Indiana University in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. He served as a Term Assistant Professor, and then became an Advanced Manufacturing Scientist at ThermoFisher Scientific in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Currently, Smith is an assistant track and field coach at DePauw.  He is a senior Research Scientist at Vertellus Specialties, Inc. in Indianapolis, where he develops and optimizes chemical processes. Smith lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Loretta ’02.  They have two children William and Anthony.
