Greencastle, Ind. - After posting the best scoring average by a DePauw freshman since 1997, Tigers guard Maya Howard has been named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year.
Howard, the North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year, was second on the team with 10.3 points per game including a career-high 24 in the February 6 victory over Hiram. Her 10.3 scoring average was the highest by a DePauw freshman since Ann Hall averaged 10.5 points during the 1996-97 season.
She was the team leader in free throws made (86) and attempted (103) and was second with 83.5 percent shooting from the charity stripe and with 1.3 steals per outing.
Howard scored 22 points in DePauw's NCAC Tournament semifinal win over Kenyon and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. She also was the leading scorer with 14 in the Tigers' 65-50 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
DePauw finished the season with a 22-7 record including a 13th straight NCAA Division III Championship appearance and a fourth NCAC tournament title in five seasons.
