Greencastle, Ind. — Alex Gasaway (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville), a communication major and film studies minor on the women's basketball team, has been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Gasaway and men's swimming and diving student-athlete Jack Burgeson were among the 58 student-athletes competing in winter sports on all NCAA levels to earn the honor. The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded each fall, winter and spring to 29 men and 29 women each season for a total of 174 scholarships each academic year.
Second on the team in both scoring (12.9) and rebounding (6.1) this season, Gasaway shot 48.6 percent from the floor. The two-time all-North Coast Athletic Conference first team selection is the only player in DePauw history to score at least 1,200 points and grab 600 rebounds after finishing her career ranked fifth in both categories with 1,248 points and 684 boards.
She was one of five seniors to combine for a 116-8 record which marked the most wins by any DePauw senior class and the most in Division III over the last four seasons. That included the 2013 NCAA Division III championship and a national quarterfinal appearance this season.
Gasaway earned Women's Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-America honors this year, was a third team D3hoops.com All-America choice last year and first team preseason selection this year.
In February, Gasaway earned Capital One Division III Women's Basketball Third Team Academic All-America® honors and was also a D3hoops.com First Team All-Great Lakes Region choice this season.
A Media Fellow at DePauw, Gasaway served an internship with the Ellen DeGeneres Show in addition to holding leadership positions with the University's student-operated D3TV. Last spring she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma National Scholar Athlete Honor Society.
Since the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship program was created in 1964, 21 DePauw student-athletes have won the award. A complete listing is available here.
