Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw got out to first-inning leads in both ends of its doubleheader against 12th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, but the Titans rallied to a sweep by scores of 7-4 and 9-5. The Tigers dropped to 23-17, while Illinois Wesleyan improved to 34-5.
DePauw struck first in the bottom of the first as Taylor Golden singled with one out and moved to second on Jennifer Ridge's single through the left side. Gabby Smart then delivered a two-run double to right center.
The Titans reached the board in the third when Amanda Fazzari led off with a single and advanced to second on Victoria Whitaker's sacrifice bunt. Kyle McKeown followed with a double to left center that scored Fazzari and cut the DePauw lead to 2-1.
An error on Grace Hendrickson's fielder's choice in the fourth allowed Lauren Krumwiede to score and the Tigers pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Sammi Bell singled, moved to second on Golden's sacrifice bunt and scored on Ridge's doubles to right center.
DePauw took that lead into the seventh, but Allie Riordan led off with a single and Cassidy Tarpey walked. Katie Caulfield reached on a fielder's choiced that forced Riordan at third, but Fazzari followed with a game-tying three-run homer to left center.
Whitaker then singled and McKeown was hit by a pitch and Sara Rogers delivered a three-run homer.
Ridge had three of DePauw's 10 hits, while Smart added a pair. Fazzari and Whitaker each had two of the Titans' eight hits.
Kahla Noland dropped to 19-11 with the loss, while Molly McCready improved to 19-2 with seven strikeouts and no walks.
The Tigers appeared to have regrouped in game two as Ridge drew a two-out walk in the first and Linsey Button followed with a single. An error on an attempted pickoff at first allowed both runners to move up a base. Smart followed with an RBI single up the middle before Megan Landahl hammered a double to left center, plating Button.
Illiois Wesleyan took the lead for good in the third as Rogers drove in McKeown, who led off the frame with a double, with a grounder. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Sarah Platt who brought home Sara Daley with a walk. Fazzari then cleared the bases with a double to right center to make it 5-2.
Button's two-out solo homer in the fifth closed the Titans' lead to 5-3, but the guests added four more in the seventh on back-to-back two-run, two-out doubles from Rogers and Hannah Bowen.
Ridge's seventh-inning single scored Morgan Pigusch before Golden scored on a passed ball to make it 9-5.
Button led DePauw with two of the Tigers' seven hits, while Bowen had three of Illinois Wesleyan's 13 hits. Rogers, Platt and McKeown added two apiece.
Hailey Freres dropped to 2-5 with the loss, while Chloe Montgomery improved to 5-0.
DePauw returns to action on Friday, May 2, when it hosts Ohio Wesleyan in the second game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Tigers are the top seed in the tournament after winning the conference title.
