Greencastle, Ind.- Eight student-athletes will represent the DePauw men's swimming and diving team at the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championship held March 19-22 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
The eight include: Alex Alfonso (Jr.; New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Jack Burgeson (Sr.; Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park), Matt Gleason (Sr.; New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Alex Grissom (So.; Franklin, Ind./Franklin), Matt Haeske (Jr.; Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), Casey Hooker (Jr.; Rensselaer, Ind./Rensselaer Central), Blake Lehmann (So.; Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) and Stephen McMurtry (So.; Fort Wright, Ky./Covington Latin).
DePauw's 400 freestyle relay (Lehmann, Alfonso, Hooker, Burgeson) is seeded fourth and its 800 free relay (Hooker, Grissom, McMurtry, Haeske) is seeded seventh, while the 200 medley relay (Lehmann, Gleason, Hooker, Burgeson) is tenth. The Tigers will also compete in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
Hooker qualified, individually, in the 200 free in a time of 1:38.58 at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships and is seeded fifth in the event. He is seeded sixth in the 200 butterfly with a qualifying time of 1:49.01 at the Total Performance Invitational and will be competing in the 500 free with a time of 4:31.44 at NCAC Championships and is seeded 17th in the event.
Alfonso is seed 14th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:51.28 at the NCAC Championships. He will also compete in the 100 fly and 100 free. Grissom qualified for the 200 free with a time of 1:39.92 at the NCAC Championships and is seeded 20th in the event. Grissom will also compete in the 500 free.
Four other Tigers will swim in individual events including Burgeson (50 free), Lehmann (50 free, 100 fly, 100 free), Gleason (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, 200 breast) and McMurtry (500 free).
DePauw enters as the 14th-ranked team in the latest Division III coaches' poll. The Tigers have finished in the top 13 at four of the last six Division III Championships including a program-best 11th in 2008.
