Greencastle, Ind. – Thirteen runs off 16 hits and a 4-for-4 performance from Jack Thompson gave DePauw a 13-4 win over Rockford on Saturday.
Thompson was a triple shy of the cycle, hitting a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning. He finished with three RBI and scored three runs.
The game was tied 3-3 in the middle of the fourth before a CJ Yoannou 2-run triple and a Thompson RBI double made it a 6-3 game after four.
DePauw then finished the game strong with five runs in the sixth and adding on one additional run in each the seventh and eighth innings.
The sixth was highlighted by Thompson's home run, but later in the inning, Ryan Grippo recorded a two-run single to right center field. Zack Wade also had an RBI single, and Reid Pittard brought another run across on a fielder's choice.
Mike Hammel did enough to pick up the win after five innings of work. He gave up three earned runs, which came off a 3-run home run from Chris Carlson in the top of the fourth.
Jack Dillon relieved him in the sixth and picked up a rare four inning save. He entered with a 6-3 lead and gave up just one earned run in the seventh inning.
Grippo also finished with 3 RBI, going 2-for-2 and scoring two runs in the process.
DePauw improves to 8-2 overall, while Rockford drops to 5-4. The two teams meet again Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
