Greencastle, Ind. – The DePauw baseball team collected a season-high 17 hits as they picked up their fifth win of the season in an 11-4 victory over Capital on Tuesday.
Eight of DePauw's nine starters recorded a hit, which got started early thanks to a 2-run home run from Jack Thompson in the top of the first. The hits kept coming as DePauw led 3-0 after the first inning.
Capital cut the DePauw lead to 3-2 after three innings before DePauw put up another three spot in the bottom of the fourth as well as the bottom of the seventh.
Lucas Italiano finished 4-of-5 on the day with two doubles and one RBI. Thompson and Mike Hammel each collected two hits and three RBI, and Reid Pittard and Zack Wade each recorded three hits. Pittard, Tate Stewart and Ryan Grippo each added an RBI as well.
Hammel improved to 3-0 on the mound after 6.2 innings of work in which he gave up four runs on 10 hits. Wyatt Spector, Danny Farrar and Nick Horvath finished the game, giving up just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Tyler Spears took the loss for Capital. He was knocked out after 3.2 innings of work where he gave up four earned runs on seven hits.
DePauw moves to 5-4 on the young season, while Capital drops to 7-3. Next up, the Tigers travel to Tucson, Ariz. over spring break to play in seven games in five days.
The Tigers will be back home April 2-3 in a four-game series against Wittenberg to open North Coast Athletic Conference play.
