Greencastle, Ind. - Today, DePauw University reaffirmed its commitment to diversity and inclusion in athletics as president Mark McCoy signed the NCAA Presidential Pledge.
The pledge (posted below) is intended to address the low representation of racial and ethnic minorities and women in coaching and athletics administration at all levels.
DePauw is currently serving as a pilot program for RISE (Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting understanding, respect and equality. Coaches and administrators will serve as facilitators of learning modules to student-athletes who, in turn, will facilitate discussions with their teams.
The athletics deparment has also partnered with the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program to create an infrastructure for athletic administrators, coaches and recreational sports leaders to support LGBTQ inclusion. LGBT SportSafe had acknowledged DePauw as a silver medallion institution.
As part of that initiative, Chris Mosier has been invited to speak on Sunday, September 25, with educational sessions on LGBTQ inclusion in athletics scheduled the next day for student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
In recent years, DePauw has applied for and received NCAA diversity grants which provide grant funding to members committed to enhancing ethnic minority and gender representation in athletics administration.
In 2014, DePauw was awarded an NCAA Ethnic Minorities and Women's Internship Grant and created a position for the director of Welch Fitness Center. As the two-year grant ended, the University retained the intern as a full-time Assistant Athletics Director for Internal Operations. Last spring, DePauw was awarded an NCAA Strategic Alliance Matching Grant and promoted a staff member to Assistant Athletics Director for Athletics Events and Athletics Marketing.
"The athletics department seeks to create, maintain and sustain an inclusive environment, with a culture that fosters equitable student-athlete participation and career opportunities for coaches and administrators from diverse backgrounds," McCoy said.
"Even before this pledge, DePauw's athletics department have been active in programs that support staff development of under-represented populations in sport and has supported efforts to create a diverse workforce within the department."

Consistent with our mission and values, our institution, a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, pledges to specifically commit to establishing initiatives for achieving ethnic and racial diversity, gender equity and inclusion, with a focus and emphasis on hiring practices in intercollegiate athletics, to reflect the diversity of our membership and our nation.
We recognize and value the experiences individuals from diverse backgrounds bring to intercollegiate athletics. To that end, we will strive to identify, recruit and interview individuals from diverse backgrounds in an effort to increase their representation and retention as commissioners, athletics directors, coaches and other leaders in athletics. As part of this commitment, we will also engage in a regular diversity, inclusion and equity review to inform campus policy and diversity initiatives.
We understand this to be a collective responsibility we owe to student-athletes, staff, our athletics programs and the entire campus community.
